From 18 to 22 August 2025, Accra – Ghana will host the African Feminist Macroeconomics Academy (AFMA) under the theme:"A Feminist Approach to Tax Justice – Recovering Public Resources for Gender Equality and Economic Justice
At a time when Africa faces enormous economic challenges – from illicit financial flows worth billions annually, unfair tax systems, to harmful tax incentives widening gender gaps – this initiative places women and economic justice at the center of the solution. Women and marginalized groups bear the heaviest burden when governments fail to provide essential services such as healthcare, education, and childcare
AFMA Regional is more than a conference – it is a movement bringing together
Feminist activists advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment in economic policies
Academics and researchers focused on economic and tax justice.
Movement leaders and practitioners reimagining fair and inclusive tax systems
Over five intensive days, the academy will address key topics including
Legal and structural challenges of African tax systems and their impact on women and marginalized groups
Mechanisms for recovering public resources to benefit society as a whole, enhancing essential services
Fair tax strategies that fund sustainable development and promote social justice and gender equality
Governance and transparency in combating illicit financial flows and improving public expenditure efficiency
According to World Bank reports, Africa loses over $50 billion annually due to financial mismanagement and tax evasion, directly affecting women and marginalized groups relying on basic services
